Counselors in rehabilitation often perform the following tasks:
People with disabilities can benefit from the services of a rehabilitation counselor at any point in their life. As they prepare for the world of employment, others assist pupils in learning coping mechanisms for dealing with their disabilities. Those who have served their country assist veterans deal with the emotional or physical impacts of their duty. In addition, there are many who work with the elderly to assist them adjust to limitations that may have been caused by sickness or accident. In some personal-injury or worker's compensation lawsuits, experts may testify or give assessments.

Education
A master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or a comparable subject is typically required by most companies. Master’s degree programs prepare students to assess the requirements of clients, devise and implement job placement methods, as well as gain an understanding of the medical and psychological issues associated with disability, in most cases, students are required to do an internship as part of these programs.
Rehabilitation counselors who hold a master's degree in counseling are more equipped to serve clients with more complex needs than those who only have bachelor's degrees in the field. Registration, Certification, and Licenses.
For rehabilitation counselors, state and service type licensing requirements vary. A counselor license is required for rehabilitation counselors who give counseling services to clients and patients. State licensure regulations may not apply to rehabilitation counselors who provide other services. If, for example, a rehabilitation counselor provides solely vocational rehabilitation services or job placement aid, they may not be required to be licensed.
Master's degree and 2,000 to 4,000 hours of clinical practice are commonly required for licensure. The counselor must also pass a state-recognized test in addition to these requirements. Counselors are required to obtain continuing education credits every year in order to keep their licenses current.

The certification of rehabilitation counselors may be preferred or required by some workplaces. CRC certification is offered by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. Tests and other prerequisites must be met before an applicant may be accepted into the program. Every five years, a new certification is required. To maintain certification, counselors must meet continuing education requirements or pass a re-examination.
Qualities that are critical to success
The ability to communicate. Communication skills are essential for rehabilitation counselors. They must communicate ideas and facts in a way that is understandable to the general public.
Compassion. Most of the time, rehab counselors help clients who are going through a very trying time. Compassionate and empathic service providers are needed in this field.
The ability to use critical thinking. Counselors in the field of rehabilitation must be able to devise treatment plans that take into account the unique talents and interests of each client.
The ability to communicate effectively with others. Counselors in the field of rehabilitation need to be able to work with a wide range of clients. It is common for them to spend the majority of their time dealing directly with clients, employers, or other professionals. They need to be able to build and maintain effective working relationships.
Learning how to listen. Counselors in rehabilitation must be able to listen carefully and empathize with their patients. They must devote their complete attention to each session in order to get an understanding of their clients' issues, concerns, and ideals.
Patience. In order to assist clients, overcome their limitations, rehabilitation counselors must be patient.
Pay
In May 2020, the median yearly salary for rehabilitation counselors was $37,530. It is the salary at which half of the workers in an occupation earned more and half earned less. Between the lowest 10% and the richest 10%, there was a wide disparity in income.
Job Projections
Rehabilitation counselors are expected to see a 10% increase in employment between 2020 and 2030, which is roughly the same rate as the national average.
